Paper and parchment assets

Conservation and maintenance

With paper and parchment assets, outside archives and libraries, we mean all those artistic, historical, furnishing or collectible goods whose basic material is paper or parchment (normally obtained from calf, sheep or goat).

Parchment is one of the most resistant materials to time, to the assault of pests (microorganisms and macroorganisms), to water, fire and usury.

As early as the 13th century, Federico II forbade the use of paper for stationery documents, which were required to have the greatest possible durability.

We find the use of parchment since the 4th century in the Mediterranean area and until the last century it remained in vogue. Despite the introduction of paper, which in Italy is widely used from the 14th century onwards, the use of the dated but robust support remains widespread.

In this category we include, for example: watercolors, paintings, prints, papier mache works, comics, stamps, vinyl record cases, vintage banknotes, puppets, paper patterns, sets, particular leather artifacts or paper, such as those very common in Chinese culture (screens, fans, lampshades, …), jewels, etc.

Prodoc is able to treat with the same care dedicated to archival and book assets every paper or parchment artefact that requires maintenance and / or recovery activities.

Following a request for intervention, we will carry out a technical / economic evaluation of the intervention, without obligation, and if necessary also an inspection of the conservation site.

In the event of an emergency, we are able to promptly intervene throughout Italy with specialized teams to contain damage with the possible collection of materials to take them to our laboratory.

Intervention methods

In the preventive phase Prodoc assesses the conservation methods and their adequacy, then proceeds to:

  • Control of the conservation rooms and their facilities
  • Evaluation of the disposition of the assets (supports, furnishings and premises)
  • Control of materials used for storage
  • Entomological control
  • Risk assessment

The periodic maintenance activities are instead designed to keep the asset in an optimal state and in particular Prodoc deals with:

  • Biological and microbiological analyses to identify harmful microorganisms
  • Disinfection and pest control activities
  • Cleaning through manual dusting or with aspirators equipped with HEPA filters
  • Replacement of unsuitable storing material
